The 1982 Maryland Juvenile Championship was an #MD

The 1982 Maryland Juvenile Championship was an #MDBred race for the ages! Dixieland Band (right), a future two-time graded stakes winner, defeated next year's Preakness winner Deputed Testamony (left) and Belmont champ Caveat.

Bred and owned by Mary Sharp, Dixieland Band retired in 1984 with a career record of 8-3-4 from 24 starts and earnings of $441,320.

This year's Maryland Juvenile will take place today at Laurel Park!

With the Cigar Mile-G2 coming up this Saturday at Aqueduct, we're looking back at the race's namesake, #MDBred legend Cigar! He dominated the 1994 edition of the race, then known as the NYRA Mile, by seven lengths in a breakthrough performance.

The NYRA Mile was Cigar's second win in a row, continuing a winning streak that would eventually grow to 16. The streak included victories in the 1995 Breeders' Cup Classic-G1 and the inaugural Dubai World Cup in 1996. The Allen Paulson homebred was inducted into the @nmrhof in 2002 and the #MDBred Hall of Fame in 2013.
