Launched in 2018, the Mini Maryland Thoroughbred Career Program is a partnership with the Maryland Horse Industry Foundation (MHIF) and University of Maryland Extension 4-H Horse program to allow 4-H youth to learn about and experience the Thoroughbred industry. A three-part series run throughout the beginning of the year for 4-H youth ages 14 and older, the Mini MTCP's sessions cover topics such as reproduction, training, and sales, while exposing youth to various organizations and individuals within Maryland's Thoroughbred Industry. Sessions are held at various locations around the state.
Maryland and non-Maryland residents are all welcome! No previous experience with horses is required.
Note: This program is designed for people between the ages of 14 and 19. Parents/chaperones are welcome to join, but please only RSVP for participants.
COVID-19 Update: As of May 5, all of the sessions will take place on Zoom. The good news is, this new format will allow us to have even more guests! For the time being, our goal is to have chats monthly, but it may be even more frequent than that. We will update the list below and the sign up page as details are confirmed.
May 14 - Thoroughbred Training & Racing - Brittany & Sheldon Russell- 1:00pm (Zoom)
Chat with trainer/jockey couple Brittany and Sheldon Russell about their formative years, current daily routines, favorite horses and how they work together as a team. This is a great opportunity to ask questions about how to get your foot in the door in a racing stable, or as an exercise rider/jockey!
Date TBD - Thoroughbred Sales - Paget Bennett
Hear from Fasig-Tipton Midlantic sales director, Paget Bennett, about what goes into planning and executing a Thoroughbred sale. Paget has a vast amount of equine experience that she is happy to share with the next generation!
